Key Issues
As a member of the Raleigh City Council, I will work for:
- Efficient Government
- Sustainable Growth
- Safe Environment and Neighborhoods
Efficient Government:
Along with your input, my top priority will be to support increased coordination between our communities, property owners and local government. These policies would increase the levels of effectiveness and efficiency of City of Raleigh agencies and programs in response to the tremendous growth in our area. There are many important issues related to this growth that will require the collaborative efforts of city and county government, advocacy groups, and the business community to produce a solution that ensures healthy and secure living conditions for all of our citizens.
My role on the Raleigh City Council will be one of bringing about fair and objective solutions based on factual data, not the desires of special interests.
Sustainable Growth:
I support the hard-working Raleigh families that live in our neighborhoods. I will work to avoid raising property taxes and stand for sound public policy that allows the city government to function efficiently but not at the expense of our hard-working citizens. Growth should pay for itself in a fair and equitable manner. The business community should share in the cost of the infrastructure necessary for development. This development must be based upon environmentally sound decisions. I believe that there is a way for everyone involved to share the costs of necessary improvements while decreasing the need for increased taxes. I support the use of public-private-nonprofit partnerships to support the needs of our community. Such alliances will increase the supply of alternative approaches to addressing community challenges such as school construction, housing, public safety and environmental protection.
Safe Environment and Neighborhoods:
Raleigh has done well with the development of parks and greenways; however, more efforts are necessary to ensure that environmentally sensitive areas are preserved. I am in favor of preserving open spaces and rural land, which are fast disappearing in Raleigh and Wake County. Similarly, traffic and transportation networks must be updated. I will give serious consideration to proposals that will thoughtfully address these goals.
Growth in our area over the past 25 years has surpassed planning efforts concerning storm water runoff. The issue of storm water management is critical to Raleigh, particularly as it impacts our sole source of drinking water. Storm water runoff from commercial and residential development in the city poses a serious threat to water quality. As a member of the Raleigh Planning Commission I have been able to identify ways the City of Raleigh can work with neighborhoods, the business community, and federal and state regulators to identify safe, healthy and economically fair solutions to storm water management.
